The Spectrum of Engineering: Research Situated in Regional Contexts (Vol. I)
Keywords:
situated engineering; sustainability; Latin American territories; social technology; common goodSynopsis
This collective volume brings together research situated in regional contexts of Latin America that approach engineering as a social, technical, and ethically committed practice oriented toward territorial development. Across ten chapters, the work moves from historical reflections on the engineering of Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt to applied studies in agroindustry, quality management, occupational health and safety, and information technologies. It addresses issues such as pollution from illicit crops, air quality in municipalities without monitoring, the adoption of ISO certifications in small and medium-sized enterprises, the implementation of Industry 4.0, the characterization of essential oils, green nanotechnology, and soil evaluation for buildings in vulnerable communities. The book highlights the need to articulate scientific knowledge with local knowledge, to promote accessible and low-cost technologies, and to rethink territorial development from a critical, sustainable perspective oriented toward the common good.
